Toronto teen charged in boy's death

TORONTO

A Toronto teen is charged in the death of a four-year-old boy in Bowmanville last summer, police announced Friday.

The boy was found without vital signs in a Bowmanville home on Aug. 28, 2013, after Durham Regional Police were called there.

He was declared dead in hospital.

An autopsy revealed the boy -- who lived in Toronto but was in the care of a family friend at the time of his death -- died of multiple blunt-force trauma, police said.

Police subsequently declared the death homicide.

A 16-year-old was arrested in Toronto on Thursday and charged with manslaughter, but cannot be identified under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Tanya Berlass, 35, of Toronto, was charged in March with failing to provide the necessities of life. She was released on bail is awaiting trial.
