A Canadian professor was one of two people killed Tuesday when a landslide struck a French island in the Indian Ocean.

Universite Laval in Quebec City said Dr. Eric Dewailly was a noted public-health expert in the school's faculty of medicine.

The university said his wife Dr. Sylvie Dodin Dewailly, who also teaches at the medical school, was seriously injured.

The couple was hiking on Reunion Island off the coast of Madagascar when a cliff gave way near the town of Plaine-des-Palmistes.

Rocks fell on the Canadian couple and four others, including a baby.

Other members of the group were helping those who were hurt when a second wave of rocks fell on them, killing Dr. Dewailly and a woman hiker.

The injured were airlifted to a hospital in the island's capital of Saint-Denis.

The Biberon waterfall where the landslide took place was closed to visitors.
